Blowing Out Summer

The 80Z All Stars shook Santee at the last Summer Concert of 2008
The 80Z All Stars shook Santee at the last Summer Concert of 2008

Thursday, August 28, marked the end of another Santee Summer Concert Series, and the 80Z All Stars rocked the house big time.

The 80z All Stars are a kick-ass band (can I say that…wait, this is my blog, so I can say “kick-ass” if I want to)…Anyway, the 80z All Stars are a kick-ass band that rocks with the best of them.  Playing everything from AC/DC to Whitesnake, from “Your Love” to “1999” they more than satisfied the crowd’s need for high-energy music from the era of spandex and big hair.  If you didn’t have the urge to at least tap your feet, if not get up on them and “Jump” – well, then there’s no hope for you.  And if you weren’t exhausted just watching them jump, bounce, and rock, you’re in better shape than I am.

Before I go on about the concert itself, I want to publicly thank the major sponsors of the Summer Concert Series: Ryan Companies, California Coast Credit Union, MTS, Target, Cox Communication, and Daphne’s Greek Cafe.  Check these companies out, and if you get the chance why not tell them “Thanks” for helping bring another great summer of music to Santee

Since this was the last summer concert, a large and boisterous crowd had gathered to listen, dance, and have fun.  It was also a big night for people watchers, with plenty of 80s survivors and their kids – not to mention a good supply of the grandparents as well.  It just goes to show you, fun music has no boundaries.

I’ve had a lot of fun going to, photographing, and blogging about these concerts, and I just wish I had been able to get to the earlier ones.  I certainly hope that some of you have had fun reading them.  I will be putting up a page with more of the pictures from the concerts I was able to attend.  I will also be writing a post about the canine music lovers of Santee.  If you have anything else you would like me to write about, please let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

Bayou Blowout in Santee

The Bayou Brothers Cook Up a Little Cajun in Santee

The Bayou Brothers Cook Up a Little Cajun in Santee

Last Thursday, August 21, the weekly Summer Concert featured the Bayou Brothers, a Zydeco band that sounds straight out of “N’awlins.”

This was the next-to-last concert of the summer, and people were more than ready to dance the night away.  There was a whole lotta shakin’ going on down there with all that “musical gumbo” the group dished up.  With a rocking mix of Zydeco, blues, R&B, and more, the band had something for just about every taste.  Many of the members have been playing professionally for decades, and they bring a load of talent and experience to the stage.  To learn more about the band, check out the Bayou Brothers website.

The Summer Concert Series has been a great draw for the Trolley Center, as well as a wonderful way for Santee residents to get out, mingle, have some fun, and meet new and old friends.  All of the sponsors of the Series deserve a round of applause for helping to bring the great music to the community.  I also want to give a “shout out” to the young women who have been there to welcome everyone and just generally add a little class to the evenings…

What?  Aren’t we still in the 21st Century?  Did we time-travel to the year 3001?  Is all the technology going to crash again?

At ease, friends.  Y3K isn’t some new millenium virus for your computer.  What Y3K happens to be is one hot dance band that just played at the weekly Summer Concert at Trolley Center last Thursday.  This is a high-energy band that really enjoys getting people up and on their feet, and the crowd was more than happy to oblige.

The band has been around for about 9 years now, and has played at quite a range of venues, including the San Diego Marathon, Seaport Village, Humphrey’s Resort, and Dick’s Last Resort.

Santee Summer Concerts

Honky Tonk Kings at the Trolley Center

Honky Tonk Kings at the Trolley Center

Every summer Santee and the Santee Trolley Center put on a series of Thursday night concerts at the Center’s amphitheater.  The music, the fun, and the companionship are all free.  If you’re hungry, there are plenty of places to grab a snack or a more substantial bite.  And if your taste runs to coffee or ice cream, you can get those as well.

I haven’t been very good at getting to the concerts this year, but I did make it last Thursday (July 31) to see the Honky Tonk Kings.  They’re billed as “Alternative roots country swing” – which is a mouthful – but they really play a wide variety of music.  In addition to music from some great country like Johnny Cash, they throw in some Elvis, some more modern country, some blues, and some pop/rock.  The group is a lot of fun to listen to, and as was obvious that night, to dance to as well.  You can check them out and see where they will be playing next at Honky Tonk Kings or see their MySpace page.

Upcoming acts at the Summer Concert series include:

August 7: Y3K (Dance hits of the 80s and 90s)

August 14: The Cat-illacs (Rock-and-Roll hits of the 50s – 90s)

August 21: Bayou Brothers (Zydeco)

August 28: 80z All Stars (can you guess what they play?)

Here are some pictures from the July 31 concert.
