Santee Salutes Moves to Town Center Community Park East

The annual Santee Salutes July 4th celebration moves to a new home for 2012, but look for the same great family-friendly fun and marvelous fireworks. This year the event will take place at Town Center Community Park East, site of the weekly Summer Concert Series (which takes this week off for the Fourth). The fun officially begins at 3:30 p.m. and lasts until 9:30 p.m. following the evening’s fireworks show. Families looking for the best spot will probably want to arrive early to save the space.

This year a long-time favorite, 80z All Stars, will return to provide the musical entertainment. The 80z All Stars have performed at previous Santee Salutes celebrations, the Summer Concert Series and the Santee Street Fair. The day will also include carnival games and inflatables for the kids (and those young at heart) and traditional food booths. New this year will be a lineup of gourmet food trucks offering everything from old-fashioned barbecue to spicy Thai delicacies. For those who like to cool down during the day, the City of Santee Aquatics Center will offer free swimming from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

At 6:00 p.m. a patriotic ceremony will celebrate the true meaning of the Fourth of July. The ceremony will feature speakers and a color guard from the Heavy Helicopter Squadron 462 (the “Heavy Haulers”) from Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar. The fireworks show begins at 9:00 p.m.

This year, to help defray some of the costs of the free event, the city will be charging a $5 fee for parking in surrounding lots, with limited preferred parking in the closest lot for $15. Handicapped parking in the preferred lot will be $5. There will be free parking with a shuttle at the Costco parking lot, beginning at 3:00 p.m. and lasting until 10:00 p.m. RV parking is also available in the Costco lot.

Another new addition is the ability to reserve a 10×10 canopy in a prime location for $100. This will allow you to enjoy the day and not have to worry about carrying chairs, tables, coolers and what-have-you a long distance from the parking lot. The fee includes preferred parking and spaces can be reserved online at www.ci.santee.ca.us.

Several area streets will have traffic limited to residents during the evening hours because of the celebration and fireworks. Bilteer Drive, Bilteer Court, San Remo Court, San Remo Drive, Conejo Place, Magnolia Park Drive, Cottonwood Avenue, Verde Vista Lane, Day Creek trail and Leavesly Trail will be closed except to residents.

Santee Salutes is presented by the City of Santee, with sponsorship from Waste Management and Cannon Pacific and donations from Lakeside Equipment Sales Inc, Bob’s Crane Service, Cottonwood Electric Cart Service and Rice RV. For more information, visit www.ci.santee.ca.us or call the Special Event Hotline at 619-258-4100 ext. 201.

80z All Stars Kick Off Rocking Summer Concert Series

80z All Stars

The sky was cloudy and gloomy, but there was more than enough energy coming from the stage to keep everyone heated up, as the 80z All Stars blew into town to open up the annual Summer Concert Series.  With their hard-driving music and electrifying personalities, band members Nigel Naughty, Motley Who, Devo 2.0, and Karate Kid had the crowd dancing all around the amphitheater.  At one point Nigel even started up a conga line that made its way up one set of stairs, around the back of the crowd, and back down the other stairs.

Conga Line

This was the second time in two weeks that this group has performed in Santee – previously they had been the closing band on the Main Stage at the Street Fair – and they will be coming back again as part of the entertainment on the Fourth of July.  Talking to the band afterwards, they admitted that Santee is one of their favorite places to play because they are always so well received.  This was certainly the case this night.  One pair of fans went so far as to create a three-part sign to ask for a song from their favorite 80s group – Journey.

I want to take a moment to thank the companies that are helping to sponsor this great concert series, particularly this year with so many businesses cutting back on their spending – to the detriment of many community organizations and activities.  So thank you to Barona Resort and Casino, Cox Communications, Daphne’s Greek Cafe, the Metropolitan Transit Service, Target, and, of course, the City of Santee.

Blowing Out Summer

The 80Z All Stars shook Santee at the last Summer Concert of 2008
The 80Z All Stars shook Santee at the last Summer Concert of 2008

Thursday, August 28, marked the end of another Santee Summer Concert Series, and the 80Z All Stars rocked the house big time.

The 80z All Stars are a kick-ass band (can I say that…wait, this is my blog, so I can say “kick-ass” if I want to)…Anyway, the 80z All Stars are a kick-ass band that rocks with the best of them.  Playing everything from AC/DC to Whitesnake, from “Your Love” to “1999” they more than satisfied the crowd’s need for high-energy music from the era of spandex and big hair.  If you didn’t have the urge to at least tap your feet, if not get up on them and “Jump” – well, then there’s no hope for you.  And if you weren’t exhausted just watching them jump, bounce, and rock, you’re in better shape than I am.

Before I go on about the concert itself, I want to publicly thank the major sponsors of the Summer Concert Series: Ryan Companies, California Coast Credit Union, MTS, Target, Cox Communication, and Daphne’s Greek Cafe.  Check these companies out, and if you get the chance why not tell them “Thanks” for helping bring another great summer of music to Santee

Since this was the last summer concert, a large and boisterous crowd had gathered to listen, dance, and have fun.  It was also a big night for people watchers, with plenty of 80s survivors and their kids – not to mention a good supply of the grandparents as well.  It just goes to show you, fun music has no boundaries.

I’ve had a lot of fun going to, photographing, and blogging about these concerts, and I just wish I had been able to get to the earlier ones.  I certainly hope that some of you have had fun reading them.  I will be putting up a page with more of the pictures from the concerts I was able to attend.  I will also be writing a post about the canine music lovers of Santee.  If you have anything else you would like me to write about, please let me know and I’ll see what I can do.
