Giving Kids “Momentum”

Momentum Tutoring Grand Opening

Wednesday, November 19, was the Grand Opening and Open House for Momentum Tutoring, a not-so-new business here in Santee.  That sounds strange until you understand that Momentum Tutoring has been working with kids on-campus for several years, but just recently opened a central location on Cuyamaca Street across from Rio Seco School.  Founder Terri Bozhor and Assistant Danelle Clark made the big decision to open in part because of the renovations going on at several of the Santee Schools campuses, which meant there were no classrooms available for their program.  The up side is that kids can now come in for help every day if they want (or, rather, if their parents want) instead of having to wait until the program came to their school.

So just what makes Momentum Tutoring different from other tutoring programs?  Well, first of all Momentum is a not-for-profit program with its own board of directors.  This means that they don’t have to answer to some out-of-town authority that might not understand the special needs of Santee children.  Second, as a not-for-profit, they are able to access grants and donations that allow them to offer scholarships and “pay what you can” programs.  Third, their program is designed to help students learn to manage their own workload, not just help them get assignments done.  Finally, they have a team of Associate Tutors made up of university, community college, and advanced high school students who work alongside credentialed teacher/tutors.  These enthusiastic young people help bridge the gap between the students who come in and the adults working with them, as well as act as big brothers/sisters and role models.

And now, a few photos of the event.
