Blowing Out Summer

The 80Z All Stars shook Santee at the last Summer Concert of 2008
The 80Z All Stars shook Santee at the last Summer Concert of 2008

Thursday, August 28, marked the end of another Santee Summer Concert Series, and the 80Z All Stars rocked the house big time.

The 80z All Stars are a kick-ass band (can I say that…wait, this is my blog, so I can say “kick-ass” if I want to)…Anyway, the 80z All Stars are a kick-ass band that rocks with the best of them.  Playing everything from AC/DC to Whitesnake, from “Your Love” to “1999” they more than satisfied the crowd’s need for high-energy music from the era of spandex and big hair.  If you didn’t have the urge to at least tap your feet, if not get up on them and “Jump” – well, then there’s no hope for you.  And if you weren’t exhausted just watching them jump, bounce, and rock, you’re in better shape than I am.

Before I go on about the concert itself, I want to publicly thank the major sponsors of the Summer Concert Series: Ryan Companies, California Coast Credit Union, MTS, Target, Cox Communication, and Daphne’s Greek Cafe.  Check these companies out, and if you get the chance why not tell them “Thanks” for helping bring another great summer of music to Santee

Since this was the last summer concert, a large and boisterous crowd had gathered to listen, dance, and have fun.  It was also a big night for people watchers, with plenty of 80s survivors and their kids – not to mention a good supply of the grandparents as well.  It just goes to show you, fun music has no boundaries.

I’ve had a lot of fun going to, photographing, and blogging about these concerts, and I just wish I had been able to get to the earlier ones.  I certainly hope that some of you have had fun reading them.  I will be putting up a page with more of the pictures from the concerts I was able to attend.  I will also be writing a post about the canine music lovers of Santee.  If you have anything else you would like me to write about, please let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

Bayou Blowout in Santee

The Bayou Brothers Cook Up a Little Cajun in Santee

The Bayou Brothers Cook Up a Little Cajun in Santee

Last Thursday, August 21, the weekly Summer Concert featured the Bayou Brothers, a Zydeco band that sounds straight out of “N’awlins.”

This was the next-to-last concert of the summer, and people were more than ready to dance the night away.  There was a whole lotta shakin’ going on down there with all that “musical gumbo” the group dished up.  With a rocking mix of Zydeco, blues, R&B, and more, the band had something for just about every taste.  Many of the members have been playing professionally for decades, and they bring a load of talent and experience to the stage.  To learn more about the band, check out the Bayou Brothers website.

The Summer Concert Series has been a great draw for the Trolley Center, as well as a wonderful way for Santee residents to get out, mingle, have some fun, and meet new and old friends.  All of the sponsors of the Series deserve a round of applause for helping to bring the great music to the community.  I also want to give a “shout out” to the young women who have been there to welcome everyone and just generally add a little class to the evenings…

August After-5 Mixer

Rachel and Robert Folsom - Owners of Tutoring Club in Santee

Rachel and Robert Folsom - Owners of Tutoring Club in Santee

This month the Santee Chamber of Commerce’s After-5 Mixer was at Tutoring Club of Santee.  There was a good turnout, especially considering that August is usually a slow month because of vacation time.  Our thanks to Rachel and Robert Folsom for hosting the get-together.

The After-5 Mixer is always a great way to meet and get to know some of the other business owners in Santee.  This month’s attendees ran the gamut from home-based and small business owners to the head of the Santee Post Office to the owner of the Santee Inn.

Another attendee was Rudy Reyes, former candidate for East County Supervisor and now candidate for Santee City Council.  Rudy was also one of the heroes of the 2003 Cedar Fire, and was critically burned while helping people escape the blaze.  He is very focused on making sure that San Diego County is ready for the next huge fires – whenever they come.

This month’s 50-50 drawing winner was Ike Enzenauer of the Santee Lions Club.  He will put the money into the fund the Lions Club has to build a Sensory Garden at Santee Lakes.  If you would like to help the Lions with this project, you can get more information on their website Santee Lions Club.  The Lions also put up a handicapped fishing pier at the Lakes, and you can find pictures from the dedication and other activities on their site.

The next After-5 Mixer will be on September 18 at La Trattoria Restaurant located at 9720 A Mission Gorge Road.  For more information, visit the Santee Chamber of Commerce website, or call them at 619-449-6572

Hep “Cats” Rock Santee

This past Thursday the Cat-illacs brought their brand of vintage rock-and-roll to the Trolley Center.

Is this group popular?  Well, if you tried to get a parking spot within reasonable walking distance, you would know the answer to that question.  To be honest, I have not been to all of the summer concerts this year, but this was by far the biggest crowd I’ve seen.  One person even admitted to having set up that morning just to be sure to get a good spot to enjoy the music.  Now that is dedication!

The band specializes in the classic rock, blues, and soul of the 50s and 60s, with a generous helping of hits of the 70s-90s to keep everyone dancing.  And dance

they did.  There was even a group of women line dancing in the aisle between the groups of chairs set up around the amphitheater.

As they have every week I have gone to the concert, the City of Santee had an information booth set up.  In addition to information about services and activities they have been providing information about the proposed expansion of Las Colinas.  More about that in a future blog.

This was one of the last summer concerts of the year.  The final conerts will be:
August 21: The Bayou Brothers
August 28: 80z All Stars
Come out and enjoy the warm nights, good music, and the all-around fun of the Santee Summer Concert Series.  And check out more about the Cat-illacs at their website (link below).

Y3K Rocks the Trolley Center

What?  Aren’t we still in the 21st Century?  Did we time-travel to the year 3001?  Is all the technology going to crash again?

At ease, friends.  Y3K isn’t some new millenium virus for your computer.  What Y3K happens to be is one hot dance band that just played at the weekly Summer Concert at Trolley Center last Thursday.  This is a high-energy band that really enjoys getting people up and on their feet, and the crowd was more than happy to oblige.

The band has been around for about 9 years now, and has played at quite a range of venues, including the San Diego Marathon, Seaport Village, Humphrey’s Resort, and Dick’s Last Resort.
